“So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back
ceaselessly into the past.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald
Yes, it does seem cheesy, but this quote really resonates
with me- and apparently a lot of other people too. Not to say that life is
purposeless -but if you think about it, this quote really captures the lives of
working-class Americans. We are a part of a constant uphill battle for success.
Whether it be in a career or simply finding happiness, we are always
yearning for something bigger. It’s simply human nature.
Think about school, for example. Now, I think I’d be correct
in assuming that everyone in this class is attending college (if you’re in AP English
and not attending college, what’s the point?). College, as many of us know, is
very expensive. We spend thousands of dollars per semester just to go to school.
This is a great example of striving for a higher purpose. College is a choice. We choose
to put ourselves through endless hours of stress, sweat, and tears all for a
tiny piece of paper that says congrats, you made it -now onto the next journey.
We have the option to just forego it all. Forget about everything- it’s too
hard. Drop out of high school and live with our parents until God knows when. But
we don’t. We keep on dreaming. We are a society of achievers. Always
striving for better. So, as we work through this school year (one more after
this!), lets remind ourselves of our ultimate goals. Let’s keep going.
I really like how you took something we briefly discussed in class and analyzed it deeper. I also like how you connected it students which is very relatable.
