“This is NOT a race issue” an angry parent stated at Francis-Howell
High School after hearing that a nearby district would be allowing students to
transfer there. The problem, however, is that it was in fact a race
issue. See, the reason this parent was so upset was because the neighboring
district happened to be 85% colored students.
The fact
that segregation is still happening in certain parts of the country is
astonishing. All because of the color of skin? If anything, African Americans
should hate white people, not the other way around. Because,
unfortunately, we were the ones who forced them away from their families and
shipped them across the world to be treated as less than human. Not to mention
that many did not survive the trip because of overcrowding. It is 2019. When
are the stubborn southerners going to wake up and realize that this is not
acceptable? According to history.com, slavery in the United States began in 1619.
It has now been four HUNDRED years and some people think this discrimination is
still okay? That it was ever okay? It is truly sickening.
Troy may be
somewhat of a safe space, but we need to realize that the world around us is not
actually like this. People are not usually so accepting. People don’t care about
anyone but themselves. Don’t let yourself be fooled by the bubble that surrounds
us- because eventually, it is going to pop.
